History of Monroe, NC
Monroe was established in 1843 as a settlement, and named after our fifth president, James Monroe. It was incorporated as a city in December 1844. The city became known for being a trading center for agricultural areas in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina, which farmed tobacco.
